a study on the word ~stand~ part 6
A covenant is a coming together, a meeting or agreement of minds.
“The covenant of redemption is the mutual agreement between the Father and Son, respecting the redemption of sinners by Christ. The covenant of grace is that by which God engages to bestow salvation on man, upon the condition that man shall believe in Christ and yield obedience to the terms of the gospel.” Webster’s 1828
Our Father Yahweh has been establishing covenants with man since the beginning. It is His desire that we covenant with Him, come into agreement with Him and He promises to bless us if we do. Isn’t it amazing that the Creator loves us so much that He cares to bring us into a covenant relationship with Himself?
God established a covenant with Noah…
And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and everything that is in the earth shall die. But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons’ wives with thee. Genesis 6:17-18
He made a covenant with Noah and every living creature on the earth that He would never again destroy the earth with a flood. The token of this covenant was the rainbow.
And I will remember my covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. Genesis 9:15-16
…the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us, not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: 1Peter 3:20-21
God made a covenant with Abraham and the token of this covenant was circumcision.
This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. Genesis 17:10-11
And that same covenant He established with Isaac and his seed…
And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. Genesis 17:19
Isaac and Abraham
And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time, And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice. Genesis 22:15-18
All of these things were shadows of things to come…shadows of our new covenant in Christ…
Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. Colosians 2:17
And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.Col 2:10-12
God remembers His covenants…
And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God had respect unto them. Exodus 2:24-25
There is so much richness in this word ~ covenant. I’m just touching the tip of the iceberg here, because I want to relate it to the word we are studying which is STAND.
In keeping Yahweh’s covenant with us through the blood of His Son our Savior, His law is written on our hearts and we delight to do His commandments…
This is all about STANDING, this is so deep…so all encompassing…
to be continued…
