Who May Abide the Day of His Coming?

Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD (YHWH) of hosts. But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap: And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD (YHWH) an offering in righteousness.” Malachi 3: 1-3

Malachi prophesied the coming of our Savior and King. We know who this messenger was whom he speaks of…the one who was sent to prepare the way of the Lord…He was John. “For this is the one referred to by Isaiah the prophet, saying, ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make ready the way of the Lord, make His paths straight!” Matthew 3:3

We are told how Jesus came to the Temple in Jerusalem. How He overthrew the tables of the money changers…“And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves.” Matthew 21:12

Now it says that Jesus shall sit as a refiner and purify the sons of Levi… As His people we are called a holy nation, a royal priesthood…“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light:” 1 Peter 2:9

In that sense then we are as the sons of Levi and Jesus refines us and purifies us…
“But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.” 1 Peter 5:10

This is such a beautiful picture of our walk with Christ and worthy to contemplate especially when we are going through trials. Any trial that we have to face we know is for our benefit to refine and purify us. We can expect that in His goodness our Father will chasten us, refine us, purify us so that we will be fit vessels of His making.

Keeping this in mind, this is what really spoke to me this time when reading Malachi 3…

“Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this,” says the Lord (YHWH) of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it. “And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, so that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,” says the Lord (YHWH) of hosts.” Malachi 3: 10-11

I began to consider what His storehouse is today… Where is God’s house today?

If His people are the priesthood and His Holy Spirit dwells in the temple which is each believer than the believers are the temple and storehouse.

“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” 1 Corinthians 3:16

We can give our tithes to a pastor, or an assembly, but we can also give our tithes to fellow believers and we should, because God says to try Him in this, and see if He will not bless us for doing as He says.

This is part of what it means to draw close to our Father to His likeness in obedience to His Word…to dwell in the shadow of the Almighty.

Jesus is coming again…He tells us to… “Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.” Luke 21: 36

Who may abide in the day of His coming?  Be watchful…and pray always…
